Ramadevarabetta

Karnataka Higher Education Minister has urged Chief Minister to constitute a committee to build a temple at Ramadevarabetta in Ramanagaram on the lines of the Ram temple at Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh.

  • In a letter to the chief minister, he requested that Ramadevarabetta be developed as ‘Ayodhya of South India’. In his letter he said that there is a strong belief among the people of the region that Sugriva installed Ramadevarabetta.

  • The famous blockbuster Sholay was shot on Ramnagar Hill. Since the 1970s this location has become extremely popular among tourists.
  • Ramadevara Betta Hill is the only Vulture Sanctuary in India and one of the best regions for trekking.
  • Ramanagara is well known for its sericulture, and is nicknamed Silk Town and Silk City .
  • The Closepet granites are a major geological feature of this region and are from the Lower Proterozoic era.
  • The town was known as Shamserabad at the ruling time of Tippu Sultan.
  • It was then called Closepet, after Sir Barry Close (1756–1813) in pre-Independence times.
  • It was renamed Ramanagara by the former chief minister of Karnataka state Mr. Kangal Hanumanthayya.
