The Uttarakhand government has decided to establish Rajaji Tiger Reserve Conservation Foundation to accelerate the ecological, economic, social and cultural development of the landscapes in and around the reserve.
About Rajaji Tiger Reserve
- In 1983 the intent notification of Rajaji National Park was issued after merging the three wildlife sanctuaries of Uttarakhand – Rajaji, Motichur and Chilla.
- It was named after the famous freedom fighter C.Rajgopalachari popularly known as “Rajaji”.Rajaji National Park is spread over an area of 820.42 sq km.
- The Rajaji Tiger Reserve was notified under the provision of Wild Life Protection Act 1972.
- The tiger reserve provides fresh & clear air and serve as the lungs of the three major ciites of Uttarakhand –Dehradun, Haridwar and Rishikesh.
- Rajaji Tiger Reserve is situated along the hills and foothills of Shiwalik ranges and represent the Shiwalik eco-system.
- Rajaji Tiger Reserve has a sizeable population of Tiger and Asian Elephants.
- It is home to a variety of wild animals like Leopard, Jungle cat, Himalayan Black Bear, Sloth Bear, Striped Hyena, Goral, Sambar, Wild Pig, Spotted Deer, Barking Deer and many more.
