Quantum dots and Carbon Quantum dots

Recently, a scientist from Assam-Dr Binoy Kumar Saikia has bagged the prestigious Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award for his pioneering research on coal and energy.

  • Dr. Saikia has made outstanding contributions on the formation of fluorescent carbon quantum dots (CQDs) from Indian coal. His indigenous patented CQD technology for diverse applications falls under ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (self-reliant India programme), leading to import substitution.

What are Quantum dots ?

  • Quantum dots are artificial nanostructures that can possess many varied properties, depending on their material and shape.
  • For example, due to their particular electronic properties they can be used as active materials in single-electron transistors.

What are Carbon Quantum dots?

  • Discovered accidentally in 2004, CQDs (Carbon Quantum dots) are small carbon nano-particles with size less than 10 nm (nano metre).
  • Carbon quantum dots (C-QDs) have gained much attention due to the unique characteristics, notably, alluring fluorescence, chemical-stability, water-solubility, and magnificent photostability properties.
  • Carbon Quantum dots are promising nanomaterials for photo-catalysis, ions sensing, biological imaging, heavy metal detection, adsorption treatment, supercapacitor, membrane fabrication and water pollution treatment.
