The Quad Leaders’ Summit was held in Tokyo in Japan on May 24. Prime Minister Narendra Modi took part in the meeting along with US President Joe Biden, Prime Minister of Australia Anthony Albanese, and Prime Minister of Japan Fumio Kishida.
- In his opening remarks at the Summit, Mr Modi said that Quad has carved out a niche for itself, in such a short span of time, before the world.
- This was the fourth interaction of the Leaders since their first virtual meeting in March 2021, the Summit in Washington D.C in September 2021 and their virtual interaction in March 2022.
Quad fellowship programme
- A new Quad fellowship programme has been launched on May 24 at the QUAD summit in Tokyo. This is a first-of-its-kind scholarship program that will bring together the top minds of Australia, India, Japan, and the United States in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
- The Fellowship will sponsor one hundred students per year, 25 from each Quad country, to pursue master’s and doctoral degrees at leading STEM graduate universities in the United States.
Q-CHAMP
- A Quad Climate Change Action and Mitigation Package (Q-CHAMP) was announced to strengthen efforts towards green shipping, clean energy including green hydrogen andclimate and disaster resilient infrastructure.
Common Statement of Principles on Critical Technology Supply Chains
- As part of ongoing work related to critical and emerging technologies, Quad’s Common Statement of Principles on Critical Technology Supply Chains was launched.
- The four countries will coordinate capacity building programmes for the Indo-Pacific region to bolster critical cyber security infrastructure of the region.
