The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation has constituted a committee to improve quality of data released by the Central Government.
- The 28-member Standing Committee on Statistics (SCES) is chaired by former Chief Statistician Pronab Sen. The committee will have as members experts from a wide variety of institutions, including the Reserve Bank of India, finance ministry, Niti Aayog, and the United Nations.
- In recent years, doubts have been cast on the quality of Indian statistics.
- In March 2019 as many as 108 economists and social scientists had called for restoration of “institutional independence” and integrity to the statistical organisations.
