Prime Minister participates in Sant Mirabai Janmotsav in Mathura

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi participated in Sant Mirabai Janmotsav, a program to celebrate the 525th birth anniversary of Sant Mirabai in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh on 23 November 2023.

  • Sant Mirabai was a great social reformer too. Mirabai was born in 1504 AD in Merta District of Rajasthan. Her father was Ratan Singh.
  • A great devotee of Krishna, she devoted her life in his devotion singing and praising him. Though she married Rana Kumbha ( also known as Bhojraj) of Mewar, she considered herself the wife of Krishna.
  • After the death of Bhoj Raj in 1521 CE, Meera Bai left Mewar for Vrindavan in search of lord Krishna. She died in 1548 CE at the age of 50 in Dwarka in the Gujarat Sultanate.
  • Meera broke many social norms of the time. She accepted Raidas (Ravidas), a Dalit by birth, as her guru.
  • It is believed that it was Raidas who had given her that statue of Krishna, all those years ago when she was a small girl.
  • Choosing the language of the people, Meera wrote in Vrajbhasha, interspersed with Rajasthani.
  • Bhaktmal, a poetry collection that describes the biography of Meera Bai, is written by Guru Nabha Dass ji in 1585 CE in Braja language.
