Prime Minister co-chairs the 18th India-ASEAN Summit

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on October 28, 2021 participated in the 18th India-ASEAN Summit at the invitation of Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei, the current Chair of ASEAN.

  • The Summit was held virtually and saw participation from the Leaders of ASEAN Member States.
  • Highlighting the milestone of 30th anniversary of India-ASEAN Partnership, the leaders announced the Year 2022 as India-ASEAN Friendship Year. Prime Minister underlined the centrality of ASEAN in India’s Act East Policy and in India’s Vision for the wider Indo-Pacific Vision.
  • The Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN, was established on 8 August 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand, with the signing of the ASEAN Declaration.
  • Currently ten Member States of ASEAN are: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei Darussalam , Viet Nam, Lao PD. Myanmar and Cambodia.
  • The First ASEAN Summit was held in Bali, Indonesia on 23-24 February 1976.
  • 8 August is observed as ASEAN Day.
