India and Egypt signed a strategic partnership agreement as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi held one-on-one talks in Cairo on June 25, 2023.
- The strategic partnership agreement is a follow-up to the decision arrived at after the two leaders met in January this year, when El-Sisi visited India as the Chief Guest for the Republic Day celebrations this year. At that time, they had decided to elevate India-Egypt bilateral relationship to “strategic partnership”.
Order of the Nile
- In a special ceremony at the Presidency in Cairo on 25 June 2023, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Mr. Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, conferred Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi with the ‘Order of the Nile’, the highest civilian award of Egypt.
Al-Hakim Mosque
- Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi visited Al-Hakim Mosque in Cairo during his State Visit to Egypt. It is an 11th century historically and culturally significant site in Egypt’s Cairo.
- The mosque is a testament of the rich heritage and culture that India and Egypt share. The Dawoodi Bohra community remarkably restored the mosque.
- The Al-Hakim mosque was named after the 16th Fatimid caliph Al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah (985-1021).
Heliopolis Commonwealth War Grave Cemetery
- Prime Minister Modi also visited the Heliopolis Commonwealth War Grave Cemetery in Cairo during his State Visit to Egypt.
- Prime Minister paid homage to over 4300 valiant Indian soldiers who sacrificed their lives in Egypt and Aden during the 1st World War.
India Unit in the Egyptian Cabinet
- Prime Minister Modi also held a meeting on 24 June 2023 with the “India Unit” in the Egyptian Cabinet.
- This India Unit was set up earlier this year following the State Visit of President of Egypt, Mr. Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, to India as Chief Guest for Republic Day 2023.
- The India Unit is headed by the Prime Minister of Egypt H.E. Mr. Mustafa Madbouly, and comprises a number of Ministers and senior officials.
