PM Modi to inaugurate the 107th Indian Science Congress

The Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will inaugurate 107th Indian Science Congress at University of Agricultural Sciences, GKVK, Bengaluru on January 3, 2020.

Prime Minister Modi will deliver the inaugural address on the occasion and also launch I-STEM Portal on the occasion.

Theme

The Theme of the India Science Congress (ISC) this year is “Science and Technology: Rural Development”.

About Indian Science Congress

  • The Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA) owes its origin to the foresight and initiative of two British Chemists, namely, Professor J. L. Simonsen and Professor P.S. MacMahon.
  • It occurred to them that scientific research in India might be stimulated if an annual meeting of research workers somewhat on the lines of the British Association for the Advancement of Science could be arranged. The Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA) owes its origin to the foresight and initiative of two British Chemists, namely, Professor J. L. Simonsen and Professor P.S. MacMahon.
  • The first meeting of the Congress was held from January 15-17, 1914 at the premises of the Asiatic Society, Calcutta, with the Justice Sir Asutosh Mukherjee, the then Vice-Chancellor of the Calcutta University, as President. The papers numbering 35 were divided into six sections-Botany, Chemistry, Ethnography, Geology, Physics, Zoology under six Sectional Presidents. There are now fourteen sections .
  • The Silver Jubilee Session of the Science Congress was held at Calcutta in 1938 .
  • The Science Congress celebrated its Golden Jubilee in October, 1963 at Delhi with Prof.D.S. Kothari as General President.
  • The Diamond Jubilee Session of the Science Congress was held at Chandigarh in January 3-9, 1973, under the Presidentship of Dr.S.Bhagavantam.
  • The Indian Science Congress Association celebrated its 100th year of its incepton in June 2, 2012 and the Centenary Session was held at Kolkata in 2013 under the Presidentship of Dr. Manmohan Singh , the then Prime Minister of India.
