The Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi addressed the ‘Garib Kalyan Sammelan’ in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh on May 31.
- This public event was organized in state capitals, district headquarters and Krishi Vigyan Kendras across the country to commemorate the completion of eight years of the government led by Prime Minister Modi.
- The idea behind this programme was to enable the elected public representatives across the country to interact directly with the public to get feedback about the various welfare programmes being run by the government.
- The PM-GKAY has been under implementation since April 2020, as the largest food security program in the world.
- Under the extended PM-GKAY each beneficiary will get additional 5 kg free ration per person per month in addition to his normal quota of foodgrains under the NFSA. This means that every poor household would get nearly double the normal quantity of ration.
PM-Kisan
- On the occasion, the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi also released the 11th instalment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-Kisan) scheme.
- An amount of over Rs. 21,000 crores was transferred to more than 10 crore beneficiary farmer families.
- The Prime Minister also interacted with the beneficiaries of various government welfare schemes across the country.
- PM-KISAN is a central sector scheme launched on 24th February, 2019 to supplement financial needs of land holding farmers.
- Financial benefit of Rs 6000/- per year in three equal installments, every four month is transferred into the bank accounts of farmers’ families across the country through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mode.
- The scheme was initially meant for small and marginal farmers (SMFs) having landholding upto 2 hectares but scope of the scheme was extended to cover all landholding farmers with effect from 01.06.2019.
