High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka, Santosh Jha, laid the foundation stone for the symbolic Pillar of Ashoka at Waskaduwe Sri Subuthi Maha Viharaya, marking a significant chapter in Indo-Lanka historical and religious connections.

  • The Viharaya at Waskaduwe houses only the documented authentic relics of The Buddha in Sri Lanka which are part of the Kapilavastu relics.
  • The project, entrusted to Sri Lankan artisans, aims to showcase the rich cultural ties between India and Sri Lanka.
  • The Pillar of Ashoka, renowned for its lion capital and Dharma Chakra emblem, symbolizes Buddhist teachings.
  • The construction of the Pillar of Dharma serves as a reciprocal gesture to honour the emperor’s pivotal role in gifting Buddhism to the island nation, thereby further strengthening the people to people ties.
