The Padma Multipurpose Bridge (PMBP) was inaugurated on June 25 by the Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina by paying toll tax.
- India extended unwavering support when Bangladesh decided to self-finance the construction of the project.
Salient features of Padma Multipurpose Bridge
- The bridge will connect at least 20 districts of Bangladesh and is expected to help in faster transportation of goods and commodities with India and other neighbouring countries like Nepal and Bhutan.
- The PMBP is a multipurpose rail-road bridge over the Padma River– the downstream part of the Ganges after it enters Bangladesh territory.
- The main PMBP bridge spanning 6.15 kilometres is the largest bridge in the country and the second-largest in the Indo-Gangetic Plain.
- It will connect Louhajong, Munshiganj to Shariatpur and Madaripur, linking the south-west of the country, to northern and eastern regions.
- Through PMBP, Bangladesh will also be a part of the Asian Highway Network that seeks to link 32 countries via roadways to Europe.
- The bridge forms an essential part of Asian Highway 1 (AH1).
- The Padma bridge’s rail route add to the Trans-Asian Rail Route, which seeks to connect Bangladesh with South Asian and Southeast Asian countries like India, Pakistan, Myanmar, and China through rail connectivity.
