India’s first Oscar winner and costume designer Bhanu Athaiya, died on October 15, 2020. She was 91.
- Ms. Athaiya won the Academy Award for Best Costume Design, along with John Mollo, for her work in Richard Attenborough’s 1983 film ‘Gandhi’
- The film starred Ben Kingsley as the Mahatma.
- The biopic about Mahatma Gandhi swept the Oscars with eight awards.
- The Kolhapur-born Athaiya began her career as a costume designer in Hindi cinema with Guru Dutt’s 1956 super hit C.I.D. She went on to work in over 100 films.
