Surgical oncologist R. Ravi Kannan, Director of the Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (CCHRC) in Assam, is one of the Ramon Magsaysay Awardees for 2023.
- Shri Kannan is credited with revolutionising cancer treatment in Assam through people-centric and pro-poor healthcare.
- The CCHRC provides free or subsidised cancer care treatment to an average of 5,000 new patients annually, catering to approximately 20,000 poor patients for treatments and follow-ups.
- The Ramon Magsaysay Award is often called the ‘Nobel Prize of Asia’.
- This year, in the ceremony’s 65th iteration, four persons were given the Ramon Magsaysay Award. Besides Ravi Kannan, other three are; Korvi Rakshand from Bangladesh, Eugenio Lemos from Timor-Leste and Miriam Coronel-Ferrer from the Philippines.
