Recently the North’s Korean Central News Agency said it conducted “another important test” under its plan to develop a reconnaissance satellite. The agency said authorities tested the satellite’s data transmission, reception and ground-based control systems.
- A spy satellite is among a long wish list of new weapons systems that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has vowed to introduce to cope with what he calls U.S. hostility.
What are Reconnaissance satellites?
- Reconnaissance satellites are used to spy on other countries. They provide intelligence information on the military activities of foreign countries.
- These satellites can even detect missile launches or nuclear explosions in space.
- To operate a reconnaissance satellite, North Korea must launch a long-range rocket to put it into orbit. But the UN bans such a launch by North Korea because it considers that as a cover for testing its long-range missile technology.
- The United States and its allies called North Korea’s latest tests of satellite systems clear violations of United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions, which prohibit any development of technology applicable to North Korea’s ballistic missile programmes.
