North Korea barred from competing at 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has barred North Korea from competing at the 2022 Winter Olympics schedule to be held in Beijing.

  • North Koreas has been barred as part of its punishment for its “unilateral decision” to drop out of the Tokyo Games 2020.
  • North Korea chose not to send its athletes to the Summer Games due to concerns its athletes could contract Covid-19 and bring the virus back into the impoverished nation.
  • North Korea will not receive any assistance from the IOC during the period of suspension, and the IOC said North Korea will not get a share of the money earned from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, as the country “did not contribute to the success of the Olympic Games.
  • The 2022 Winter Olympics, officially known as the XXIV Olympic Winter Games is scheduled to take place from 4 to 20 February 2022, in Beijing.
