A recent study based on NASA images found blooms of the marine species Noctiluca scintillans, which is also known as ‘sea sparkle’, lining coastlines around the Arabian Sea.
- The Noctiluca blooms force out plankton that play a vital part in the Arabian Sea’s food chain.
- The shrinking of glaciers and snow cover in the Himalayas have caused monsoon winds blowing offshore from land warmer and moister, which is preferable for Noctiluca scintillans .
- Noctiluca scintillans is a millimetre-size planktonic organism with the ability to thrive in coastal waters, forms thick green swirls and filaments.
