Renowned Assamese poet Nilamani Phookan was conferred the country’s highest literary award, Jnanpith in Guwahati on 11th April.
- The award was presented for the first time in Guwahati. A celebrated poet, Phookan was named for the 56th Jnanpith Award in December 2021.
- The notable works of Mr Phukan are ‘Xurjya Henu Naami Aahe Ei Nodiyedi’, ‘Kabita’, and ‘Gulapi Jamur Lagna’.
- Eighty-eight-year-old Phookan is the third person to win the Jnanpith Award from Assam. Before him Mamoni Roisom Goswami and Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya had won the Award and they were awarded in Delhi.
About Jnanpith Awarth
- The country’s highest literary award, the Jnanpith is bestowed on writers for “their outstanding contribution to literature”.
- The Jnanpith Award is presented by the Bharatiya Jnanpith, established by the Shahu Shanti Prasad Jain.
- Instituted in 1961, the recipients of Jnanpith award are given a cash prize of Rs 11 lakh, a citation plaque and a bronze replica of Goddess Saraswati.
- Malyalam author G.S. Kurup was the first recipient of this award.
