Nigerian former finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has been selected as the next Director General of the World Trade Organization. She is the first woman and first African as its leader.
- The WTO’s 164 members on February 15, 2021 unanimously selected the 66-year-old development economist to serve a four-year term as director-general.
- Until the end of last year Dr Okonjo-Iweala chaired the global vaccine alliance, GAVI, which aims to increase access to vaccines around the world and she now says the WTO has crucial work to do in this area.
