NATO appoints Mark Rutte alliance’s next boss

On 26 June 2024, the North Atlantic Council decided to appoint Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte as the next Secretary General of NATO, succeeding Jens Stoltenberg.

Mr Rutte will assume his functions as Secretary General from 1 October 2024, when Mr Stoltenberg’s term expires after ten years at the helm of the Alliance.

Rutte was appointment by NATO ambassadors during a meeting at the 32-nation alliance’s headquarters in Brussels. U.S.

Stoltenberg spent more than a decade at the helm.

Secretaries general chair meetings and guide often delicate consultations among member countries to ensure the organization, which operates on consensus, can function smoothly. The NATO leader also ensures decisions are put into action and speaks on behalf of all members.
