Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired his first-ever meeting of the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) on World Wildlife Day on March 3, 2025. In the meeting, held at Gujarat’s Gir National Park, the NBWL reviewed a host of flagship wildlife conservation programmes

  • Gharials (Gavialis gangeticus)

About the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL)

🔹 Apex advisory body for wildlife policy & conservation in India.
🔹 Established in 2003, following an amendment to The Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972.
🔹 Last full-body NBWL meeting was held on September 5, 2012, chaired by then PM Manmohan Singh.
🔹 Composition:

  • Chairperson: Prime Minister
  • Vice-Chairperson: Union Environment Minister
  • 47 members including:
    • Chief of the Army Staff
    • Secretaries from key ministries (Defence, Finance, Tribal Affairs, etc.)
    • Three Lok Sabha MPs & one Rajya Sabha MP
    • Director General of Forest
