National Action Plan for dog Mediated Rabies Elimination by 2030 (NAPRE)

On the occasion of World Rabies Day on September 28, 2021, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Shri Mansukh Mandaviya unveiled the National Action Plan for dog Mediated Rabies Elimination by 2030 (NAPRE).

  • The “Joint Inter-Ministerial Declaration Support Statement” for Elimination of Dog mediated Rabies from India by 2030 through One Health Approach was also launched.

About Rabies

  • Dogs are the main source of human rabies deaths, contributing up to 99% of all rabies transmissions to humans.
  • Interrupting transmission is feasible through vaccination of dogs and prevention of dog bites.
  • Rabies is 100% fatal but 100% vaccine preventable. 33% of global rabies deaths are recorded in India.
  • Rabies is present on all continents, except Antarctica, with over 95% of human deaths occurring in the Asia and Africa regions.
  • Rabies is one of the Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) that predominantly affects poor and vulnerable populations who live in remote rural locations.
