The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi on December 22, 2020 addressed the Centenary Celebrations of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) through video conference.
- During his address, the Prime Minister recalled Sir Sayyad’s remark that the ‘the first and foremost duty of one who is concerned about his country is to work for the welfare of all people. Irrespective of the caste, creed or religion.’
- He also released a postal stamp commemorating the event.
- In 1877, Sir Syed founded the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College in Aligarh and patterned the college after Oxford and Cambridge universities that he had visited on a trip to England.
- By 1920 the college was transformed into the Aligarh Muslim University.
- From 1920 until her death, Sultan Jahan Begum was the founding Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University. Even till today, she is the only female Chancellor ever served for Aligarh Muslim University.
- Dr Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin is current Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University.
