NALSAR to be 1st gender-neutral institute in India

Hyderabad based National Academy of Legal Studies and Research (NALSAR) has designated one floor on its campus as a gender-neutral space with rooms allotted to students, who self-identify themselves as members of the LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer plus) community.

  • The washroom on the academic block’s ground floor is also gender-neutral. The GH-6 building houses a hostel, which may later fully become a gender-neutral hostel.
  • The varsity further said it already has an interim policy in place to address inclusivity concerns of the LGBTQ+ community, and is in the process of drafting a final policy.
  • Vice-Chancellor Faizan Mustafa said that the university aimed to create a safe and inclusive campus.
  • This is not the first time, NALSAR has done deeds in favour of LGBTQ+ community.
  • In June 2015, NALSAR became the first university to issue a gender neutral certificate to a LGBTQ+ community student and used the neutral prefix of “Mx”.
