Two new Indian cities have been designated Unesco creative cities on the occasion of World Cities Day on October 31.
Mumbai, the city of dreams, and Hyderabad, the home of haleem and biryani, were designated Unesco creative cities on the occasion of World Cities Day on October 31.
Mumbai entered the global network of creative cities under the film category and Hyderabad under gastronomy.
The network brings together cities that base development on creativity in music, arts and folk crafts, design, cinema, literature, digital arts or gastronomy.
Till now, Varanasi (music), Chennai (music) and Jaipur (crafts & folk art) were in the network, which was on October 31, 2019 expanded to 246 members, with the inclusion of 66 cities, including Mumbai and Hyderabad.
Previously, in 2010, haleem was honoured with the Geographical Indication (GI) status, thus becoming the first meat-based product from India to win the prestigious tag.
As laboratories of ideas and innovative practices, the UNESCO Creative Cities bring a tangible contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals through innovative thinking and action. Through their commitment, cities are championing sustainable development actions that directly benefit communities at urban level.
