The Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 1 chaired a high-level meeting in Morbi, Gujarat to review the situation in the wake of the unfortunate bridge mishap there.
- Nearly 134 people including women and children lost their lives after the suspension cable bridge on River Machchhu collapsed on October 30 evening.
- As many as nine people were arrested by the police today in connection with the cable bill collapse tragedy in Morbi.
- Morbi suspension bridge was built to give a unique identity to Morbi using the latest technology available in those days, in Europe.
- The 233-metre historic Morbi suspension bridge was first inaugurated on February 20, 1879, by then-Mumbai Governor Richard Temple.
- It is believed that the bridge was built on the lines of the Ram and Lakshman Jhulas on the River Ganga in Uttarakhand by Morbi’s former ruler Sir Waghji Thakor.
- It was 1.25 m wide and spans 233 m on the Machchhu River connecting Darbargadh Palace and Lakhdhirji Engineering College.
