In preparation for Mahakumbh 2025, dense forests have been developed across Prayagraj to ensure a healthier and more pleasant environment for the millions of devotees anticipated to visit the city.
The Prayagraj Municipal Corporation has adopted the innovative Miyawaki technique to create multiple “oxygen banks” over the last two years, transforming previously barren or underutilized spaces into thriving green forests.
What is the Miyawaki Technique?
Developed in the 1970s by renowned Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki, this method creates dense, fast-growing forests even in limited urban spaces. Key features of the Miyawaki technique include:
- Dense Plantation: Trees and shrubs are planted close together to mimic natural forest ecosystems.
- Use of Native Species: Local plant species are prioritized, ensuring better adaptability and supporting regional biodiversity.
- Accelerated Growth: Plants grow up to 10 times faster than in traditional methods, achieving a mature forest state in just a few years.
- Eco-Benefits:
- Enhanced soil quality.
- Increased carbon absorption and oxygen production.
- Support for richer biodiversity, including birds, insects, and other wildlife.
Benefits in Urban Areas:
- Transformation of polluted or barren lands into green ecosystems.
- Improved air quality, crucial for dense urban settings like Prayagraj.
- Contribution to climate resilience by reducing urban heat and mitigating pollution.
