Launched in April 2022, Mission Amrit Sarovar has made significant strides in tackling water scarcity in India by constructing or rejuvenating over 68,000 Amrit Sarovars (ponds) by January 2025.
- The mission’s primary objective is to build 75 ponds in each district, with a national target of 50,000 ponds. The initiative has already exceeded its goal, improving the availability of surface and groundwater across the country.
Impact of Amrit Sarovars: These Amrit Sarovars have:
- Enhanced water availability in both surface and groundwater sources.
- Addressed immediate water needs in various regions.
- Established sustainable water sources for future generations.
Phase II: Renewed Focus and Community Participation: Phase II of Mission Amrit Sarovar will continue with a focus on:
- Community participation (Jan Bhagidaari) to ensure continued water availability.
- Strengthening climate resilience and achieving long-term ecological balance.
- Delivering lasting benefits for future generations.
Execution and Funding: The works under Mission Amrit Sarovar are being implemented through convergence with several ongoing schemes, including:
- Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS).
- 15th Finance Commission Grants.
- Sub-schemes of Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sichai Yojana, including Watershed Development Component and Har Khet Ko Pani.
States are also utilizing their own schemes and encouraging public contributions like crowdfunding and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to support the mission.
