- The 72nd edition of the Cannes Film Festival 2019, held in French town of Cannes, wrapped with jury president Alejandro González Iñárritu announcing the group’s unanimous decision to award the Palme d’Or to South Korean director Bong Joon-ho for his sly, politically charged “Parasite.
- Franco-Senegalese filmmaker Mati Diop made history as the first black female filmmaker in competition.
- Beyond the Cannes award, the young Indian director of photography, Modhura Palit, was given a special encouragement award during the Pierre Angénieux ExcelLens in Cinematography ceremony opened by the General Delegate of the festival,Thierry Frémaux, in Salle Buñuel at Palais des festivals. The award highlights the promising work of a young film professional and will offer Ms. Palit the opportunity to use the best of the Angénieux technology for the images of her next project.

- Grand Prix: Atlantics (Mati Diop): It is a ghost story about migrants directed by Franco-Senegalese filmmaker Mati Diop.
- Best Director: Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne (Young Ahmed)
- Best Actor: Antonio Banderas (Pain and Glory)
- Best Actress: Emily Beecham (Little Joe)
- Jury Prize — TIE: Les Misérables (Ladj Ly) and Bacurau (Kleber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles)
- Best Screenplay: Céline Sciamma (Portrait of a Lady on Fire)
- Special Mention: It Must Be Heaven (Elia Suleiman)
