Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta has appointed Martha Koome as country’s first female chief justice and head of the judiciary.
- In 2020, Justice Koome was a runner-up for the UN’s Kenya Person of the Year Award “for her advocacy of the rights of children in the justice system”.
- She has also served as a commissioner on the African Union’s Committee on the Rights and Welfare of Children.
- She was among the lawyers involved in the clamour in the 1980s to repeal Section 2A of the constitution which made the country a one-party state.
