‘Maitri Diwas’ marking the day India recognized Bangladesh ten days before its liberation on 16 December 1971 will be celebrated on December 6 in 18 countries across the world.
- India was one of the first countries to establish bilateral diplomatic relations with the newly independent Bangladesh in 1971.
- During the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Bangladesh in March 2021 to attend the national day of Bangladesh, it was decided to commemorate December 6 as the Maitri Diwas or Friendship Day.
- Every year the government of India and government of Bangladesh commemorate the invaluable contribution of valiant liberation warfighters or Muktijoddha to the liberation of Bangladesh.
- This year also a weeklong programme from Nov 30 to December 5 was organised by the High Commission of India in Dhaka to commemorate the occasion.
