‘Maitri Diwas’ to be celebrated to commemorate India Bangladesh friendship

‘Maitri Diwas’ marking the day India recognized Bangladesh ten days before its liberation on 16 December 1971 will be celebrated on December 6 in 18 countries across the world.

  • India was one of the first countries to establish bilateral diplomatic relations with the newly independent Bangladesh in 1971.
  • During the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Bangladesh in March 2021 to attend the national day of Bangladesh, it was decided to commemorate December 6 as the Maitri Diwas or Friendship Day.
  • Every year the government of India and government of Bangladesh commemorate the invaluable contribution of valiant liberation warfighters or Muktijoddha to the liberation of Bangladesh.
  • This year also a weeklong programme from Nov 30 to December 5 was organised by the High Commission of India in Dhaka to commemorate the occasion.
