Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP)

Union Education Minister Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ on January 21, 2021 chaired a meeting on participation of Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP) in the implementation of National Educational Policy -20.

  • Shri Pokhriyal spoke about several initiatives such as NISHTHA- the world’s largest teacher training capacity building program, digital learning through DIKSHA, Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan among others that have been taken to improve access, equity and quality of education.
  • Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP) is a UNESCO’s category 1 institute .
  • Based in New Delhi, the MGIEP was formally announced in November 2012 by the President of India and the Director-General of UNESCO.
  • It is the first UNESCO specialized education institute in India, and the first Category 1 institute in the Asia-Pacific region.
  • The role of the Institute will be to support member governments, provide advocacy, commission research and enhance capacity building.
