- The death anniversary of Baba Saheb Ambedkar falls on 6th of Dec which is observed as Mahaparinirvana Divas.
- On this day every year millions of people throng to Dr Ambedkar’s Samadhi referred as Chaityabhoomi at Dadar in Mumbai to pay respect to the great leader.
What is Parinirvana?
- Parinirvana is a Buddhist festival that marks the death of the Buddha. It is also known as Nirvana Day.
- Buddhists around the world celebrate the death of the Buddha, because they believe that having attained Enlightenment he achieved freedom from physical existence and its sufferings.
Who was B R Ambedkar?
- Ambedkar was born on 14 April, 1891 in Mhow (now in Madhya Pradesh).
- He was the first Indian to pursue a doctorate degree in economics from abroad. Apart from this, he was the first double PhD holder in Economics in South Asia.
- He was awarded a scholarship by the Gaekwad (ruler) of Baroda.
- He is called the father of the Indian Constitution since he was the chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee.
- During the 1952 general election, Ambedkar formed the Scheduled Caste Federation party.
- He converted to Buddhism in 1956.
- Some of his literary works include: The Problem of the Rupee – Its Origin and Its Solution, Waiting for a Visa, Thoughts on Linguistic States.
- He died on 6 December, 1956.
- He was posthumously conferred with Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, on 31 March, 1990.
