- Pandit Birju Maharaj-one of the foremost masters of Kathak, passed away on January 17, 2022 at the age of 83.
- The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has expressed deep grief over the passing away of legendary Kathak dancer Pandit Birju Maharaj.
- He was from Lucknow’s Kalka-Bindadin Gharana.
- Born Brij Mohan Nath Mishra, Birju Maharaj began dancing when he was four. Kathak was in the family. His father, Achhan Maharaj was from the prestigious Kalka Bindadin family of Lucknow and Maharaj took his legacy forward.
- Birju Maharaj was one of the youngest artistes to be awarded a Sangeet Natak Akademy. He was 28 at the time.
- He was also conferred with a Padma Vibhushan. He was the head of Kathak Kendra till his retirement in 1998.
