- Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award: Emma Raducanu won the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award. She rewrote history by becoming the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam, overcoming every precedent to win the US Open title in Flushing Meadows in August 2021.
- Laureus Academy Exceptional Achievement Award went to Robert Lewandowski (Football), the Bayern Munich and Poland striker.
- Italy Men’s Football Team won the Laureus World Team of the Year Award.
- Max Verstappen (Dutchman Formula-1) won the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award. The Dutchman secured his first World Championship at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in December 2021.
- Jamaican sprint star Elaine Thompson-Herah has been named sportswoman of the year.
About the Laureus World Sports Award
- First held in 2000, the annual event honours the greatest and most inspirational sporting triumphs of the year and showcases the work of Laureus Sport for Good.
- Shortlists for six categories (Sportswoman, Sportsman, Team, Breakthrough, Comeback and Action) are created by votes from more than 1,000 sports media from over 70 countries.
- The shortlist for World Athlete of the Year with a Disability is provided by the International Paralympic Committee.
- These Awards are unique because of the jury that selects each Winner: the Laureus World Sports Academy, made up of 71 of the greatest athletes alive, and a group which understands from experience the sacrifices and the pain that are the cost of greatness.
