Lactobacillus Plantarum JBC5-A next-generation probiotic

Indian scientists have developed a next-generation probiotic that provides hope for longevity and healthy aging.

  • A team of Indian Scientists has identified probiotic bacterium Lactobacillus Plantarum JBC5 from a dairy product that showed great promise in promoting healthy aging.
  • The team has also developed a yogurt using this probiotic bacterium which can be consumed to derive all these health benefits.
  • A team of scientists at the Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology, Guwahati, searched for healthy bacteria to promote healthy living in fermented dairy products following the proposal of Nobel laureate Dr. Elie Metchnikoff.

What are Probiotics?

  • Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that are good for human, especially for digestive system.
  • When a person loses “good” bacteria in body, for example after taking antibiotics, probiotics can help replace them.
  • They can help balance “good” and “bad” bacteria to keep human body working the way it should.
  • Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Saccharomyces boulardii are some of the probiotics.
