Karnataka introduces ‘Garudakshi’ system

The Karnataka Forest Department has introduced ‘Garudakshi’, an online FIR system, to combat forest encroachments, illegal tree-felling, poaching, and unauthorized entry into forest areas.

Developed in collaboration with the Wildlife Trust of India, the system aims to address the increasing incidence of forest crimes, ensure offenders face consequences, and safeguard the state’s wildlife and forest resources.

Key Features:

  1. Pilot Launch: The system will initially be rolled out in selected divisions:
    • Bengaluru Urban Division
    • Bengaluru Forest Mobile Squad Division
    • Bhadravati Division
    • Sirsi Division
    • Male Mahadeshwara Wildlife Division
  2. Feedback-Driven Enhancements: Based on inputs from forest department staff, the software will undergo updates and improvements.
  3. Phased Statewide Expansion: Once refined, the system will be implemented across all forest divisions in Karnataka.

Objectives of Garudakshi:

  • Streamline the filing and tracking of forest-related offenses.
  • Strengthen enforcement mechanisms to deter forest crimes.
  • Enhance the protection of forest ecosystems and wildlife.
