Justice Ayesha Malik set to become Pakistan’s first women Supreme Court Judge

  • Justice Ayesha Malik of the Lahore High Court is set to become the first woman Supreme Court judge of Pakistan. She is an LLM graduate from Harvard Law School.
  • The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) headed by Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed has approved the elevation of Justice Ayesha Malik by a majority of five votes against four.
  • The Judicial Commission of Pakistan’s recommendation will now be considered by a parliamentary committee which usually concurs with the JCP’s recommendation.
  • However, her elevation was not very easy affair as the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) had threatened to boycott the courts if the JPC cleared Justice Ayesha Malik’s name for elevation.
