Just 20 companies are the source of 55 per cent of the world’s single-use plastic waste

According to a research carried out by a consortium including the London School of Economics, just 20 petrochemical companies are the source of 55 per cent of the world’s single-use plastic waste thrown away globally.

  • The report was published on May 18, 2021 by Australia’s Minderoo Foundation.
  • In this “Plastic Waste Makers Index”, as the foundation has named it, energy giant Exxon Mobil leads with the highest source of single use plastics, followed by the Dow Chemical Co. and China’s Sinopec.
  • Single-use plastics are meant to be thrown out immediately after use such as plastic bottles, food packages and bags.
  • Nearly all the single-use plastic manufactured by these companies — 98 per cent is made from ” ‘virgin’ (fossil-fuel-based) feedstocks” rather than recycled materials, according to the report.
  • The study also says that Australia generates most single-use plastic waste, based on per head of population following by the United States.
  • The UK comes in fourth, with more than 40kg of As far as plastic waste generated per person per year is concerned Australia is top and second.
