Joe Biden suspends oil drilling in Arctic National Wildlife Refuge

The United State’s Joe Biden’s administration has suspended oil and gas leases in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge pending an environmental review.

  • Joe Biden’s latest move reverses former President Donald Trump’s decision to sell oil leases in the refuge to expand fossil fuel and mineral development.

About Arctic National Wildlife Refuge

  • The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) covers some 78,000 sq km.
  • It is often described as America’s last great wilderness.
  • It is home to hundreds of thousands of migrating caribou and waterfowl as well as the southern Beaufort Sea’s remaining polar bears.
  • This region is considered sacred by the indigenous Gwich’in people. They are opposed to any types of oil drilling in this area.
