About Arctic National Wildlife Refuge
- The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) covers some 78,000 sq km.
- It is often described as America’s last great wilderness.
- It is home to hundreds of thousands of migrating caribou and waterfowl as well as the southern Beaufort Sea’s remaining polar bears.
- This region is considered sacred by the indigenous Gwich’in people. They are opposed to any types of oil drilling in this area.
