The Academic Council of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on November 19, 2020 announced the decision to establish a special centre for systems medicine (SCSM) at the university.
What is systems medicine?
- Systems medicine is an approach to understand the complexity of the interactions of all the molecular and cellular determinants involved in the patho-physiology of a disease.
- According to the European Association of Systems Medicine, it is the first step on the path to personalised medicine. Systems medicine is based on computer models, in which vast amounts of clinical data are used to analyse the health of individual patients.
- Systems medicine promises to further our understanding of disease mechanisms, to boost the efficacy of treatments, and to cut the costs of healthcare.
- At its core are mechanistic models that process data from the individual patient to provide individual predictions of outcome in different scenarios.
- So in nutshell, the systems medicine is personalized, precise and systematic approach in medicine.
