The Government of India on January 7, 2021 merged Jammu and Kashmir cadre IAS, IPS and IFS officers with that of Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Mizoram and Union Territory (AGMUT) through an ordinance.
- The ordinance has amended the J&K Reorganisation Act, 2019. The ordinance has replaced sub-sections 2-6 of the law with two sub-sections.
- Now, the officers of the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir cadre can be posted to Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Mizoram and any union territory.
- The officers borne or allocated to AGMUT cadre shall function in accordance with the rules framed by the central government.
- The merger of the existing J&K cadre of IAS, IPS and IFS officers can be called a political as well as administrative move. The move sends the message of total integration of J&K with the Government of India while putting a question mark on the time it may take to return the region’s statehood.
