Iran recently informed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) of its intention to enrich uranium at a rate of up to 20% in its Fordow underground plant.
- Iran also informed that it is enriching to comply with a law recently passed by the Iranian Parliament.
- As per IAEA report published in November 2020, Iran was enriching uranium to levels greater than the limit provided for in the Vienna agreement.
Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action
The Vienna agreement is also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA.
The E3+3 (E3: European Union, UK, Germany and France+ China, Russia and the US.) and Iran signed the agreement on 14 July 2015.
Some of the provisions of this agreement are:
- dismantle two‑thirds of its centrifuges,
- export almost all of its stockpile of enriched uranium to Russia,
- restrict its uranium enrichment to 3.67 percent for a period of 15 years,
- stockpile no more than 300 kilograms of low‑enriched uranium (uranium hexafluoride) in the country at any time,
- stop using the underground plant in Fordow to enrich uranium.
