Stamps launched to commemorate five decades of Indo-Bhutan hydropower cooperation

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on a State Visit to Bhutan on 17-18 August 2019, at the invitation of Prime Minister of Bhutan Dr. Lotay Tshering.
  • During his visit, Mr. Modi complimented the people of Bhutan for this achievement while simultaneously preserving their rich cultural heritage and precious environment, in line with Bhutan’s unique development philosophy of ‘Gross National Happiness’.
  • He formally inaugurated the recently completed 720 MW Mangdechhu Hydroelectric Plant in Bhutan.
  • India and Bhutan noted that with the coming on stream of this Project, the jointly created generation capacity in Bhutan has crossed 2000 MW. The two leaders expressed their satisfaction on achieving this important milestone, and resolved to continue working together to expedite the completion of other ongoing projects such as Punatsangchhu-1, Punatsangchhu-2 and Kholongchhu.
  • Ongoing bilateral discussions on the Sankosh Reservoir hydroelectric project were also reviewed.
  • Prime Ministers of both the countries jointly released Bhutanese stamps commemorating five decades of mutually beneficial Indo-Bhutan cooperation in hydro-power sector.
  • The two countries also signed 10 MoUs to infuse new energy in their ties.
  • Mr. Modi also launched the RuPay Card in Bhutan by making a purchase at Simtokha Dzong, built in 1629 by Shabdrung Namgyal, which functions as a monastic and administrative centre .
  • The two leaders also unveiled an e-plaque on the interconnection between India’s National Knowledge Network and Bhutan’s Druk Research and Education Network.
  • The two leaders jointly inaugurated the Ground Earth Station and SATCOM network, developed with assistance from ISRO for utilisation of South Asia Satellite in Bhutan.
