India’s Ms. Uma Sekhar secured a remarkable victory by garnering 45 out of 59 votes in the initial round of elections for the Governing Council of the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT) held in Rome, Italy.
- The Governing Council, comprising 25 positions occupied by distinguished legal experts, holds a pivotal role in shaping international legal frameworks.
- As a member of the Governing Council, India is poised to play a crucial role in shaping the direction and policies of UNIDROIT in the coming years.
UNIDROIT
- UNIDROIT is an international Institute for the Unification of Private Law. It functions as an independent intergovernmental organization headquartered in Rome, Italy.
- Set up in 1926 as an auxiliary organ of the League of Nations, the Institute was, following the demise of the League, re-established in 1940 on the basis of a multilateral agreement, the UNIDROIT Statute.
- Membership of UNIDROIT is restricted to States acceding to the UNIDROIT Statute. UNIDROIT’s 65 Member States (Including India) are drawn from the five continents
- Its core mission involves studying the needs and methods for modernizing, harmonizing, and coordinating private and commercial law among States and groups of States.
- UNIDROIT actively formulates uniform law instruments, principles, and rules to achieve these objectives.
