- India has been re-elected as an observer to inter-governmental forum Arctic Council. The Arctic Council promotes cooperation, coordination and interaction among Arctic states on common issues, particularly on sustainable development and environmental protection.
- In a tweet, Secretary in Ministry of Earth Sciences M Rajeevan said, at the 11th Arctic Council ministerial meeting at Rovaniemi, Finland and India re-elected as Observer of the Arctic Council.
About Arctic Council?
- Founded in 1996 through Ottawa declaration, the Arctic Council is the leading intergovernmental forum promoting cooperation, coordination and interaction among the Arctic States, Arctic indigenous communities and other Arctic inhabitants on common Arctic issues, in particular on issues of sustainable development and environmental protection in the Arctic.
- The Ottawa Declaration lists the following countries as Members of the Arctic Council: Canada, the Kingdom of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, the Russian Federation, Sweden and the United States. India is an observer country since 2013.
