Integrated Landscape Management Plan For Greater Panna Landscape

The final report of Integrated Landscape Management Plan for Greater Panna Landscape was released on June 2, 2022 by the Ministry of Jal Shakti.

Key highlights

  • This integrated landscape management plan has been prepared in respect of Ken-Betwa Link Project by Wildlife Institute of India (WII).
  • The Integrated Landscape Management Plan provides for better habitat protection, and management of flagship species such as Tigers, Vultures, and Gharial.
  • It will help to holistically consolidate the landscape for biodiversity conservation and human well-being, especially forest dependent communities.
  • It is expected to enhance tiger carrying capacity in the landscape by strengthening connectivity with Nauradehi wildlife sanctuary and Durgavati wildlife sanctuary in MP and Ranipur wildlife sanctuary in UP.
  • This integrated landscape management plan has been prepared in respect of Ken-Betwa Link Project which has been approved by the Govt. of India in December, 2021 for implementation, following the signing of a historic agreement on 22nd March 2021 between the Union Minister of Jal Shakti and the Chief Ministers of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.
  • This project is the first major centrally driven river interlinking project in the country.

Environmental concern

  • The Ken-Betwa River Interlinking (KBRIL) Project will lead to the submergence of a major portion of the core area of the Panna Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh, triggering a major loss of the tiger and its major prey species such as chital and sambar, according to a new study.

Panna Tiger Reserve

  • Panna is the twenty second Tiger Reserve of India and fifth in Madhya Pradesh .
  • The Reserve is situated in the Vindhyan Ranges and spreads over Panna and Chattarpur districts in the north of the state.
  • The Ken river , which flows through the Reserve from south to north, is home for Gharial and Mugger, and other aquatic fauna and is one of the least polluted rivers and a tributary of Yamuna.
