Two Indian Navy women officers, as part of Navika Sagar Parikrama-II, successfully passed through Point Nemo on January 30 aboard the sailing vessel INSV Tarini.
About Point Nemo
- Point Nemo is located in the South Pacific Ocean. It is known as the Oceanic Pole of Inaccessibility—the most remote location on Earth.
- It lies approximately 2,688 kilometers from the nearest landmass, Ducie Island, part of the Pitcairn Islands.
- The closest human presence is often astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) orbiting above, emphasizing its extreme isolation.
- Beyond its remoteness, Point Nemo serves as a spacecraft cemetery, where space agencies deliberately deorbit defunct satellites and space stations, ensuring they re-enter Earth’s atmosphere and fall into the ocean with minimal risk to human populations.
- The first recorded vessel to sail through Point Nemo was the Spanish research ship Hespérides in 1999.
About INSV Tarini
