- Indonesia has passed a law on January 18, 2022 approving the relocation of its capital from slowly sinking Jakarta.
- The new capital is a site 2,000 kilometres away on the jungle-clad Borneo island that will be named “Nusantara”.
- Indonesia’s House of Representatives endorsement provides the legal framework for the move, which was first conceptualized by President Joko Widodo in April 2019. Mr Widodo had cited rising sea levels and severe congestion on densely populated Java island.
- However, the new move has been criticized by the environmentalists as they have warned it could damage ecosystems in the region.
