India’s renewable energy capacity rises 16% to nearly 210 GW by 2024

According to the Union Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE), India’s renewable energy installed capacity witnessed significant growth in 2024, increasing by 15.84% to reach 209.44 GW by December 2024, up from 180.80 GW in December 2023.

Key Highlights of India’s Renewable Energy Growth in 2024:

  • Overall Capacity Addition:
    • 28.64 GW of renewable energy capacity was added in 2024, more than doubling the 13.05 GW added in 2023.
  • Solar Power:
    • Leading the expansion, solar power contributed 24.54 GW of new capacity in 2024.
    • Cumulative installed solar capacity grew by 33.47% year-on-year to reach 97.86 GW.
  • Wind Power:
    • 3.42 GW of wind energy capacity was added in 2024.
    • Total wind capacity increased to 48.16 GW, reflecting a 7.64% growth from 2023.
  • Bioenergy:
    • Bioenergy installed capacity rose from 10.84 GW in December 2023 to 11.35 GW by December 2024.
  • Small Hydro Power:
    • Small hydro power capacity saw modest growth, rising from 4.99 GW in 2023 to 5.10 GW in 2024.
